The Geeks have inherited the earth— and they don’t look like they used to. Once considered social outcasts, today’s geeks are grown, sexy and stylish, at no expense to their intellect and soul.
Janina Gavankar is one such geek, a kind of wolf in sheep’s clothing whose Hollywood look belies a passion for all things geek. A notorious early adopter (she was the first actor on Twitter) and conversation-curator, Janina has already brought her love of eclectic discourse to her L.A.-based “Conversation Cabana” and is now launching altFound, a dynamic online space for geeks of all walks of life to find in-depth interviews, counter-culture posts, and grab “Hack Packs”, curated collections of unique life hack items, apparel and tech accessories.
Janina is quick to add that there is no shortage of lifestyle brands out there, with a number of actresses throwing their hat in the ring to supply the public with high-end beauty products and advanced recipes.
“But who is representing the set who doesn’t want to pay $3000 for a pair of vegan house shoes?”
This is something Janina aims to change: “I’ve spent my life finding alternatives to mainstream fodder. Whether it’s the inexpensive version of pricey goods, the cultural reference that a mainstream movement doesn’t even know it’s quoting, or the life hack that makes me low-maintenance.”
What separates altFound from the pack isn’t just its uncommon sensibility, though; beyond the posts and geeky finds, altTalks will see it host a series of public conversations with some impressive names and influencers. People whose brains demand to be picked and whose experience, intelligence and charisma have made them paragons. It’s a rare opportunity for fans, friends and followers. “I’m a zombie,” Janina laughs. “I like to eat brains.”
“It’s about all the alternative, fringe-y, deeply interesting finds. That’s what altFound is, for me.”
